Why Guelph-Wellington?

Located in the heart of Southern Ontario, it’s no surprise that Guelph and Wellington are strategic early adopters of business circularity. Over 12 million consumers live within 400 kilometers (250 miles) of this region, with two major shipping ports, six international airports, and several US border crossings placed in easy reach.  This is also home to Canada’s original Technology Triangle, made up of strong universities and research institutes producing world-class innovation.

Guelph-Wellington is also home to a very specific Circular Economy story – one which begins at the kitchen table.

In 2019, Guelph and Wellington were announced as winners of the federal Smart Cities Challenge.  With the $10M prize in hand, Our Food Future was launched: a four-year project focused on building a circular economy of food.  From 2020 to 2023, hundreds of local partners came together to launch pilots, lead community research, and collect data on transforming a linear food system into a circular one. The project created newly circular food businesses, reduced food waste, and increased equitable access to food.

Today, this region provides an unparalleled case study about circular economy transformation through partnerships.  Join us in Guelph-Wellington to learn more.
